Moving out is a lot of work, no doubt about it.  Additionally, when you move out, there is the other side of the coin as well: you have to move in.  The first couple of days are usually pretty chaotic in a new home.  Where is everything?  Every little thing you want to do, you need to find it first.  Boxes are everywhere as is the packing paper.  If you plan ahead, the first couple of days don’t have to be that chaotic.  You just have to make sure that you have the important things with you.  Here is a list of things you should have within reach:

  • Scissors or a packer’s knife: you need something to open up the taped boxes.
  • Flashlights: you need to find your way to the bathroom in the middle of the night with boxes everywhere?  A flashlight comes in really handy.  Also, if you have kids, it is great for a nightlight.
  • Keys: amid all the chaos, you need to make sure you got your keys in a spot that you can easily find.  Designate one spot in the kitchen where all the important things are.
  • Cell phones
  • Light bulbs: the lights were working just fine when you saw the house, but the minute you move in, all the light bulbs need to be replaced.
  • Toilet paper: houses are not stocked with it when you just move in.  Bring your own.
  • Bedding: bring bedding for everybody, so that you will have a comfortable night.  It will be a long day of unpacking the next day.
  • Towels: you will need a hand towel and a bath towel for each person.

Once you have finished the paperwork and have the keys to your new home, the work of moving and cleaning begins.  It doesn’t matter how clean the house is, there are certain areas in the house that you will have to go over again.  The first area is for sure the bathroom.  Clean all your bathrooms again, just to make them feel your own.  That way, the bathroom smells like your favorite detergent and you feel right at home.  The second area to clean again is the kitchen.  If you just put your dishes in the closet, you will always wonder what was in there before.  Clean the shelves and if you are just renting, add shelf liners.  This also gives you a good idea about how deep or wide your individual kitchen shelves are and you can decide which of your dishes will go in which closet.  The final area to clean are the floors.  Especially after moving in where everybody walks all over the house with boxes, your floors will need a good cleaning.
